My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; to do so with some passion, compassion, humor and style. My goal is to light a fire under enough people to free them from the ‘limited potential’ constraints that have been set up in their own minds; a paradigm shift from scarcity and lack, towards love and abundance.

Introduction…

Alright, today’s subject is a fun one for me…

We are going to touch on writing copy for design, and for SEO – I have extensive knowledge in this subject as I have to do this for client websites on almost a daily basis.

It is a fine balance of making things LOOK good, but also friendly for search.

So I will start basic for you guys, and then go through a few key concepts in SEO that I see many people miss when building a blog/website etc…

I will also throw in some links to some tools that I have found useless over the years that has helped me. Another thing, this is somewhat geared towards building content for blogging purposes – but the ideas remain the same.

*I am not going to get into design practices for client work, that is a different blog for a different time.

In today’s digital age, SEO copywriting isn’t just a geeky term thrown around in marketing meetings. It’s a critical skill for digital marketers and entrepreneurs who want to climb the search rankings while keeping their audience engaged.

Imagine juggling two balls:

1. one represents creativity and,

2. search optimization.

Now try doing it while walking a tightrope—fun, right?

Mastering the best practices in SEO copywriting is like perfecting that juggling act.

It’s about blending flair with SEO tactics to create content that’s both dazzling and discoverable.

Let’s get into some of this…

1. Understanding SEO Copywriting

What is SEO Copywriting?

SEO copywriting is the art (and yes, it is an art) of crafting content meant to woo both humans and search engines.

Picture this: you’re at a concert where the words are the lyrics and the search engine is the meticulous sound engineer.

The core principles revolve around creating genuine and engaging content while embedding keywords that resonate with what people are searching for right now.

It’s about striking the right chord so that when Google does its sound check, your content hits all the right notes.

The Importance of SEO in Copywriting

Think of SEO like the bright neon signs of your favorite diner that make you stop and stare—or in this case, click.

Enhancing your content’s visibility ensures that all the hard work you put into writing doesn’t just become the Internet’s best-kept secret.

Proper SEO drives traffic, simply because more eyeballs spotting your content means more potential fans (or customers, in marketing speak).

2. SEO Copywriting Best Practices

Balancing creativity and search optimization takes a well-thought-out game plan. Let’s dig into some strategies that make this balancing act smoother.

Keyword Research and Strategy

Before you even put pen to paper—or fingers to keyboard—it’s crucial to know which words or phrases are echoing in your target audience’s minds.

Keyword research is like eavesdropping on their musings.

Tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ahrefs can help you find these gems.

Incorporate them naturally, like sprinkles on a cupcake, ensuring they enhance rather than overshadow the flavor of your content.

Crafting Compelling Headlines

Headlines are the billboards of the Internet. They need to scream “Look at me!” while still carrying the essence of what your content is about.

A good tip is to weave in your primary keyword while ensuring the headline answers a question or solves a problem.

Think of it as a handshake that promises more.

Writing Engaging Content

This is geared more towards, blog content, a little less on

The trickiest part of SEO copywriting is ensuring your content reads like a bestseller while being an SEO powerhouse. Use anecdotes, pose questions, and keep the tone conversational. It’s like throwing a friendly chat into every paragraph, making sure you maintain a narrative that informs and entertains.

If you are writing on WordPress, there is a plugin called “YOAST SEO” – It will give you a score on the readability of the content and a score on the overall SEO score of the content – it will also tell you how to fix it.

Utilizing Meta Tags and Descriptions

This is an area of website / content creation I see missed ALL THE TIME with clients that have websites…

For whatever reason, the website designer missed doing it, or simply didn’t know they needed to be done.

What is a meta tag / description?

Essentially, Meta tags and descriptions are the whispers in the ear of search engines, telling them what your fabulous content is all about.

Craft these with care—include your main keyword and make it a mini pitch that encourages users to click.

These also show up in various areas on your website if your settings are set to them to appear – as well, this is what shows up in the Search Results.

If you use YOAST SEO, it will give you a score telling you if your description is SEO friendly or not.

One little thing I have started doing, is I capitalize the first letter of each word – for me, it just looks cleaner.

3. Common Challenges in SEO Copywriting

While the task may sound manageable, even seasoned writers face challenges. Knowing these hurdles ahead of time can save a lot of frustration.

I know from much experience, and the Google Updates, things change fast…

Avoiding Keyword Stuffing

This is something we all used to do…

Even ‘black hat’ tactics like placing a shit tonne of keywords in a text box at size 1 font, and making them the same color as the website background…

This used to work, and then Google caught onto us…

It’s kind of like this, imagine reading a poem where every line ends with the same word. Annoying, right? That’s the effect of keyword stuffing. Overdoing it makes your content awkward to read and can hurt your search rankings.

Focus on keyword density, ensuring they come across as a natural part of the narrative.

For the most part, Google is just now looking for content that people find valuable – there really isn’t any way around it now, you have to lead with value first.

Maintaining Authenticity

In the quest for optimization, authenticity should never become a casualty. Your audience connects with your voice, not a robotic rendition of forced keywords.

Maintaining that personal touch ensures that even when algorithms change, your content stands tall.

Also, this whole thing coming with AI… It is a great tool to help you start, but actually LEARNING the analog approach to writing, is a skill that is extremely valuable – people, in todays date, can tell when something is AI, and so can Google.

Conclusion

Mastering SEO copywriting best practices is essential for digital marketers and entrepreneurs who want to shine in a crowded digital space.

By blending creativity with search optimization, we create content that’s both appealing and visible. Don’t let the tech jargon scare you off—think of it as polishing a piece of art.

By incorporating these strategies, you’ll enhance your content strategy, making your work not only a delight to read but also easy to find.
